Brewery: Rogue Ales
Location: Newport, OR
Style: Red Ale
We picked up a 22oz bottle of Rogue Santa’s Private Reserve Ale during a late December 2008 run up to Albany. Many in the Beer Twitter community were raving about this, and the bottles label art caught our eye. Seemed like something we had to try.
I regret only getting one bottle.
This is a rich red/copper ale with a huge think creamy yellow/beige head. The aroma mixes both hops and malt into a fantastic smell. Even better – that smell turns out to be the taste! It starts with a malty lead then slides beautifully into a hop taste. Add it this a bit of dryness – something nice to find in a winter season ale – and you’ve got a damn near perfect ale.
My only issue with this…
I only bought one bottle and had to share with Mrs. Ohabeer.
Now I want more…
Brewery: Goose Island
Location: Chicago, IL
Style: Brown Ale
I’ve always liked brown ales. I think Samuel Smith was my gateway nut brown ale. I’m guessing that is the case for many people. I usually find them nice refreshing simple ales. Easily drank and not too heavy on the kick.
Goose Island Nut Brown Ale is a fine entry into the nut brown world. Pouring reveals a solid deep nut brown color with a big foamy brown tinted head. Solid nutty opening with a bit of sweetness. I know some say it has a bitter aftertaste, but I’m not getting that. I just get a nice malty end. Overall, nothing extraordinary but certainly a fine ale.
