Brewery: Cave Mountain Brewing Co.
Location: Windham, NY
Style: Spiced Winter Ale

I have to begin with with a full disclosure.

Mrs. Ohabeer and I run foamyindustries – a web design shop helping craft brands market themselves on the web. I disclose that because one of our current projects is building the Cave Mountain Brewing Co. website. The reason we wanted to work with them is clearly demonstrated in this incredible ale.

Cave Mountain Brewing Co. is a small brewery and restaurant located in the ski town of Windham, NY. It’s about 3 or so hours north of NYC in the Catskills. Out exploring one December afternoon, we decided to see what was new in Windham (about 30 minutes from the Ohabeer HQ). We discovered Cave Mountain and spent pretty much the rest of the afternoon drinking pints and talking to Amber, the owner and most excellent bartender. (I would say this even if I did not have to work with her on their site.)

By far, the winner of the day was the Spiced Winter Ale. Cave Mountain is not bottling yet, but they will fill growlers. It is for the very reason you never know when you’ll make a new find that we keep three growlers in the car at all times. We ended up getting a growler of Spiced Winter Ale and one of Nut Brown Ale (review of that some other time).

This ale pours a lovely reddish brown with a somewhat light head. (Could be a result of being in a growler for a bit.) It is quite spicy but not in that “potpourri beer” sort of way. Cardamom, ginger and cinnamon with a slight citrus hint. This is a smooth drinking ale with the slightest bit of sweet after taste.

Sadly we were splitting the growler leading to wanting much more beer than we got. As we were drinking, I said to Mrs. Ohabeer we should get a few more to split next time we were in Windham. Her response?

“No my brother, you got to buy your own growler.”
