Brewery: Rogue
Location: Newport, OR
Style: Hefeweizen
Once again, catching up on old notes. This beer dates back to New Years Eve. Mrs. Ohabeer and I each chose a beer to drink for the evening to celebrate. (We choose not to go out drinking on amateur nights.) I had chosen the Goose Island Bourbon County Stout. Mrs. Ohabeer chose a Rogue Mom Hefeweizen. Luckily, she allowed me a tasting and gave me a few notes.
It should be noted Mrs. Ohabeer is quite the Belgian fan. She also quite keen on hefeweizen and spiced beers. So, it was a bit surprising to hear she was a little disappointed in this. She felt is simply was not as spicy as hoped and had a bit to much bitterness.
I have to agree on the spiciness (or lack thereof) but thought it was pretty nicely balanced on the bitter. It may have been hard to get a clear fix on the bitterness as we had drank the Samuel Adams Chocolate Bock earlier in the evening. In any case, it was a nice beer – just not as great as we had hoped.
It poured a nice slightly cloudy gold color with a light head. It was fairly smooth drinking though a tad dry. We may have to try this again in the future – perhaps during outdoor drinking season this summer. Something tells me this might actually make a fine deck beer.
