Brewery: Belfast Bay
Location: Belfast & Portland, ME
Style: Oatmeal stout

Stout’s are basically my favorite beer. I do tend to drink much more stout in the winter months, but I am known to throw back a few during the summer as well. I’ve come to recognize a specific difference between the US and UK/Ireland stouts.

Sweetness.

Most of the US stouts I encounter tend toward a bittersweet where as UK/Ireland stouts leave off the sweetness. I prefer a less sweet stout in most cases. The McGovern’s did a nice job of filling the bill for a US stout.

Very dark almost black color with an amazingly thick creamy head that’s slightly caramel colored. As I say, it is a touch on the bitter side lacking most of the chocolate edge I find in most US oatmeal stouts. It somewhat reminded me of Guinness’ little brother.

That’s a good thing, by the way.
